![]() Augie Hughes | ![]() I was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, where the heat is dry and the golf courses abundant. At a young age, I distinctly remember feeling God's presence as we worshiped Him at church. I was mesmerized by the drummer who played dynamically and passionately as he worshipped: Willie Zayas, a drummer excited about worship music. What an amazing example. I got my first practice set when I was 13 and determined to work hard at a gift that God had given me. (No, I don't also know how to play the guitar.) When I was 18 my family moved to Virginia Beach. I had played in bands with my dad and brothers for many years and we promptly became part of the worship team. It all wasn't perfect though. For a time, I searched for fulfillment by playing in secular bands and doing the "club" thing. Selfishness was my idol and I hurt many people in the process. Living this way was the darkest, saddest time in my life. Because of God's mercy I always felt as though I knew what was right and I couldn't get away from that. I felt like a fish that couldn't get off of a hook.

![]() Augie, with his wife, Heather
| After repentance and a large piece of humble pie I was restored to my family and church. My story is an example of God's loving grace. I never want to forget all he has done in me. I love playing golf, watching football, eating Tostitos and salsa and hanging with friends. However, my wife Heather and our cute little 1 1/2 year old "pumpkin" Elise are the joys of my life. We are surrounded with family and it really is an adventure when we ALL get together. I play Pearl Export Pro Series drums and Zyldian cymbals. The sticks I like are nylon tipped Pro Mark 707's. I can't encourage young drummers enough to practice to a metronome. The studio was a total blast, but it would have been impossible for me if I wasn't able to play ON a click track. Less is (truly) More. Playing dynamically is so much more important than speed! Drumming with groove is a feel thing and can only be developed as you LISTEN and play with others. Other than that my advice is to worship with your instrument and give it 110%. God deserves our praise! | ||
